National Teen Book Club continues with Jeffrey Boakye

Jeffrey Boakye joined the Preston Manor Upper School NTBC group via live stream to discuss his journey from teacher to writer, speaker, and broadcaster, reflecting on his career and the themes of his books, including Cuts Both Ways.

With 15 years of experience teaching English in London and Yorkshire, he later transitioned to training educational institutions on race, identity, and masculinity. He is now a Senior Teaching Fellow at the University of Manchester’s Institute for Education, hosts BBC Radio 4’s Add to Playlist, and has published eight books. In recognition of his work, he received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Leicester in 2023.

Jeffrey’s writing journey began when he became a new father and was newly appointed Head of English at his school. Realizing that time to pursue his passion was limited, he was determined to get his first book published. Through an online connection, a friend introduced him to the owner of a small publishing house, leading to the release of his debut book. Speaking candidly about the financial realities of writing, he advised aspiring authors to manage their expectations and plan their finances carefully. His first book earned an advance of just £1,000, and in 2024, he received only £24 in royalties for it.

Despite these challenges, he emphasized the importance of writing with passion and sharing what inspires you with the world.
