Year 7 visit Crossness Pumping Station

On Monday 17th March, sixty-five Year 7 students were selected to visit Crossness Pumping Station where they learnt about sanitation, public health and engineering.
Students enjoyed an interactive presentation about how waste was disposed of in the past and the impact this had on people's health and the impact that water-borne diseases continue to have globally today. They received a practical demonstration of how the pumping station worked and the engineering behind Joseph Bazelgette's sewage system and had a go at making their own water filters. Students were then lucky enough to get a tour of the exhibition as well as the Beam House, where they got to see the original Victorian architecture and steam-powered pumps. Students had a wonderful time and the staff there were delighted with their engagement and enthusiasm.
